LSU just got a 2019 commitment from 4* in-state OT/TE Ray Parker from Ruston(LA).

This kid is a 6’5”, 275 pound OT/TE for Ruston HS. This a big get for Orgeron and LSU, this kid is a Top 5 Louisiana prospect.

With this commitment, LSU’s 2019 recruiting class jumps to No. 7 nationally.

One thing I’ve never kept up with is recruiting. How do they go about rating them with the stars and all?

I’m not sure of the specifics but there’s a grading scale, sort like how the combine grades NFL prospects.

It varies greatly. If you're a solid high 4 star who is genuinely committed, they will likely drop you a couple of spots at some point. That way, they always have someone new to hype. It's good business for them. Confusing for the fans though.

So if you want to remain a very high ranked recruit, you play the game. Even if you’re committed somewhere, play the game and make it look like you’re still looking around. Playing hard to get is for your benefit.

Unless you commit to Alabama. Then you automatically get one star added.

Scouts go watch games and/or film, media hype plays into it, what A class has some to do with it.

Basically it's a bunch of speculation and subjective voodoo. The high rated kids usually end up being good players. It's the ones that fly under the radar like TM7 who was a 3* or Hester that never really get graded right because they didn't have a lot of exposure or hype.
